Monday, 11th April – SCREENING: The Decline of Western Civilisation – Penelope Spheeris

To accompany the exhibition of the same name featuring Baldvin Ringsted and Otto Piene for Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, The Hidden Noise presents a one-off screening of Penelope Spheeris’ 1979 punk documentary masterpiece.

Their message is brutally clear: Destroy the old and make way for the new. This is the punk’s violent revolution; Their lawless world. This is THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A Riveting, unflinching account of the punk rock phenomenon and its alienated, reactionary subculture. This fierce, bleak portrait documents L.A.’s infamous punk bands as they perform on stage and discuss their lives, music and philosophy off stage. Through interviews with punk fans, music critics and club owners, it is a crucial, compelling statement of the most significant and influential youth movementand musical transformation of the past 3 decades. It is perhaps a prophetic glimpse of the forces that will inherit our world…. Witness THE DECLINE.

To accompany the exhibition of the same name for Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, The Hidden Noise presents a one-off screening of Penelope Spheeris’ 1988 follow-up documentary about the Metal scene. This screening with include a brief introduction by artist Baldvin Ringsted.

In the mid 80’s a new scene took over the Los Angeles nightlife–Heavy Metal. Loud, rude, sexy, sexist and anti-authoritarian. Penelope Spheeris’ THE METAL YEARS takes an in-depth look at rabid fans, desperate groupies, wanna-be rock stars that go so far as to threaten suicide if they don’t “make it.” The film also portrays the harsh reality of the music business, where everyone’s dream to become a star can’t possibly cometrue. It’s a real life “Spinal Tap” that makes us look back and ask, “What the hell were we doing?”

THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, PART II: THE METAL YEARS was released in 1988, to spectacular critical acclaim. It is a caustically hilarious look at the LA heavy metal scene. Commentaries from Ozzy Osbourne, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Alice Cooper, Lemmy of Motorhead, Poison, etc. accentuate the mostly unknown metal bands who perform the music. It features a spectacular performance from Megadeth and the scene with W.A.S.P. rocker Chris Holmes and his mother will probably remain one of the most memorable pieces of rock film history.

Kevin P. Gilday is an award winning writer and spoken word artist. Unfortunately, he is also dead.

After perishing in a tragic yoga accident, Kevin finds himself trapped in the afterlife and in line for a celestial judgement only to find things are a little different on the other side. Guided through the afterlife by a machiavellian guardian angel, the mischievous Havering Lazarus, Kevin must analyse the decisions and lies that characterised his existence if he ever hopes of justifying his life on earth.

A reflexive solo performance exploring the human desire to lie and the damage it does. Combining contemporary spoken word with monologues, multimedia and imagined conversation; this is a piece that delves into the personal experiences of one man and in doing so exposes the immutable truth of humanity – we are all liars.

This work in progress performance will be followed by an audience Q&A session.
